Not a great shoe for barefoot runnnig 2010-07-22

I've been barefoot running for a year now, and in the summer, the pavement's been so hot, that I considered buying Vibram Five Fingers. However, those have all sold out in my sizes, and so I looked around for alternatives to Vibrams. I found a website that included Feiyue Wushu shoes as a possible alternative, and I bought them, and they were disappointing.

The sole is too narrow, so when you land your feet, it concentrates the impact to a surface area about 50-60% the surface area that your bare feet would absorb (and an even smaller pct. of the surface area that normal running shoes have). When I ran with them, my heels were in pain and my knees started aching. It quickly reminded me of the reasons why I went barefoot running in the first place: to obtain a natural running posture that minimizes deterioration of my joints.)

I now use my Keen Newport Sandals as an occasional alternative to barefoot running. The soles are thin enough that my running posture remains the same. And I can easily slip in and out of them, depending on how hot the pavement is.

I ordered these to work out in. Currently doing crossfit. They are just what the doctor ordered. They are very comfortable and the gum rubber sole provides excellent traction even in the rain. If you are lifting weights your heels are flat which is excellent.
I have owned shox,asics gels, reebooks and air max. These are better than all the rest for working out. AND THEY COST $15.!!!!!!
Also they sell these for insane markups in fashion stores. Although still hard to find outside martial arts suppliers. Probably because a few movie stars have been seen wearing them. Go figure they are right here on amazon for $15. LOL

Some people complain about the smell. That's just the rubber. It will fade. If it really bugs you leave them in the garage or on the fire escape (for city dwellers) until it fades away.
Anyone who thinks you need great big cushions and springs under your feet to work out. Look up shoalin monks on youtube. You are a victim of mass marketing. Don't be fooled.

Great shoes - Not really a barefoot alternative though. 2010-06-15

I purchased these shoes as a barefoot alternative/minimalist shoe as I am very much a believer in this movement. I have many barefoot shoes ranging from the vibram fivefingers to multiple vivobarefoots. I wear nothing but minimalist shoes and study the topic regularly (see the Harvard Barefoot Running website for a good overview).

These shoes are probably a step between a regular running shoe and a barefoot shoe. If you would like to switch to barefoot, but are afraid of moving directly to something like the fivefingers, these shoes would probably work very well for you. They do not have any arch support, which is excellent. They do have a fair amount of sole, however, which prevents you from truly feeling the ground and moving with the appropriate barefoot gait.

I do not want to seem like I do not like these shoes though, as they do have some desirable assets. For one, they do have a very minimal upper, which does not restrict movement. The sole is also very flexible, albeit slightly rounded. At first the rounded sole seems a bit strange, but it will work your gluteus medius/minimus more than a normal shoe and should help with balance and ankle strength. These shoes are also very light, and the sizing for me was the same as any other minimalist shoe.

Also, you cant beat the price. Although they are not true barefoot type shoes as some other reviewers mention, if you dont have 150 bucks to drop on vivobarefoot (best barefoot shoes on the market) or dont like the look of the fivefingers (they are amazingly comfortable however only losing points for not being appropriate for every occasion) these may be a good start for you.

Finally, these shoes are way better than the Nike Free shoes (any version of them) but I would put them in a similar class of minimalist shoe. If you are wondering what these will feel like, go try on some Nike Free 3.0 shoes. These have a similar feel outside of the rounded sole. These shoes also have a flat feel, where the Nike Free's have a slightly raised heel.

Enjoy getting rid of all of your back pain through ditching the foot cast that is today's running shoe.

My mom likes it 2010-05-31

I bought these wushu shoes for my mom, and she likes them a lot because they're comfortable. She complains that because the bottom is so round, it's hard for her to balance. However, I think wushu shoes are supposed to be like that (for injury prevention). She likes them, and she wants to order another pair in black.

Good shoe for barefooters 2010-04-21

I bought these for my Mixed Martial Arts class. I'd rather go barefoot but sometimes people look at you strange, so I thought I'd try some "martial arts shoes" since they were inexpensive. I paid around $14 for mine.

They run in European sizes and I found the size to be slightly large. If you are between sizes, order DOWN. SERIOUSLY. It's a soft rubbery bottom with no arch support and a canvas upper that is glued on. The toe box is roomy to the point that they feel a little bit large. They are similar to the Keds sneakers we wore as kids.

The logo is roller painted on. They are very comfortable if you do not need arch support. Because these shoes look so UNLIKE any shoes on the American market (Nike, Adidas, New Balance, etc) people notice them and constantly ask where I got them. I wear mine all the time now, not just for MMA. In fact I bought a smaller pair for MMA and I wear my slightly looser pair for walking downtown. At $14 a pair I felt I could splurge and get an extra set.

If you buy them for MMA, know that the bottoms are a little bit too grippy to get a good pivot like when you do your round house kicks, they run slightly big and they offer no ortho support. If you normally go barefoot for MMA, I highly recommend them. If you need any support, you will want to try a different shoe.
